Procedure for CME Accreditation of Satellite Symposia

Guiding Principles

Four guiding principles, if practiced by all parties to CME presentations, can limit the introduction of bias in the CME setting. These are:

  1. CME is conducted for the education of the audience (physicians and other health workers) and, by extension, for the benefit of their patients. It promotes the dissemination of knowledge, skills, and more effective care.
  2. CME programmes should be objective and, where legitimate differences or contrasting views exist, balanced.
  3. Presentations must give a balanced view of therapeutic options. Faculty use of generic names will contribute to this impartiality.
  4. The information presented at CME activities must be unbiased. Disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest or any other potentially biasing factors must be presented to the audience. Disclosure should help participants to make judgments about potential bias.

Procedures

Applications for accreditation should be made by a member of the scientific programme of the satellite or a Professional Congress Organizer (PCO)

  1. Applicants are asked to submit an outline plan containing details of the learning objectives for the meeting, speakers and topics for review by the EACIC committee
    • Title, date(s) and venue of event
    • Duration of the activity
    • Learning objectives
    • Programme and speakers (including current affiliation)
    • Abstracts from presentations and/or speaker slides
    • In both title and content, the rules of fair balance and absence of brand names must be observed.
  2. An Acknowledgement Receipt Application message is sent by the EACIC Secretariat to the applicant as confirmation of details of the event to be accredited. A review of the material can begin. The evaluation fee is due at this point.
  3. EACIC will review the content and make any requests for modification of title(s) and/or content, based on the reviewer’s evaluation, to ensure scientific and educational quality, fair balance and appropriate use of generic names.
  4. Once all the materials conform to CME guidelines and EACIC has given formal approval, a written confirmation of the accreditation is sent to the applicant by the EACIC Secretariat. The number of CME credits is then allocated for the event.
  5. All the Evaluation forms must be completed on the EACIC website (http://www.eacic.eu) A report of the participants’ feedback will then be provided to the organiser.
